About Anne Hancock

Anne is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist located in Charlotte, North Carolina.  She promotes and teaches positive psychology, self acceptance and is an advocate and student of John Gottman PhD (University of Washington) and Sue Johnson EdD (University of Ottawa), two of the worlds most respected researchers in the field of marriage and partnership. She is licensed in the States of North Carolina and California.

As a Marriage and Family Therapist Anne helps people explore and solve problems according to their individual values and lifestyles.  She practices primarily from these theoretical viewpoints:

  • Emotion Focused Therapy – EFT is a short term (8-20 sessions), structured approach to couples therapy formulated in the early 80's by Drs. Sue Johnson and Les Greenberg. EFT is also used with families. A substancial body of research outlining the effectiveness of EFT now exists. Research studies find that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery and approximately 90% show significant improvements. The major contraindication for EFT is on-going violence in the relationship.
  • Positive Psychology – focusing on the strengths and virtues that enable individuals to thrive and the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives; that they want to cultivate what is best within themselves and enhance their experience of love, work and play.
  • Humanistic – focusing on present experience, free choice and the idea that self awareness leads to choice, responsibility and change.
  • Family Systems – focusing on the present and paying attention to one’s family of origin in a direct yet non-confrontational way.  You gain self awareness in current relationships and a multi-generational experience.  A genogram (a diagram of a family’s relationship system, sometimes including three generations) is constructed; usually within the first two sessions.
  • Cognitive - Behavioral - focusing on the present and interpersonal situations that perpetuate  thoughts and behaviors.  This modality is directive and actions, negotiations and contracts may be used to help modify cognitive and behavior patterns.

Anne did her academic training at Phillips Graduate Institute (formerly The California Family Study Center) and her clinical training at:

  • The Center for Individual and Family Counseling,
